Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’ Gets a Release Date

Quentin Tarantino’s next movie Django Unchained has now been given an official release date. The Weinstein Company have announced that the spaghetti western will hit theaters during the holiday season of 2012. More specifically, the Tarantino film will open nationwide on Christmas Day (that’s a Tuesday in 2012).

The movie is scheduled to begin production early this fall. Most of the major cast has been filled in, or at least is in the works. The latest news being that Leonardo DiCaprio is in negotiations and should join as long as nothing too terrible throws a monkey wrench in the plans. Furthermore, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson will be joining the movie as well.

Will Smith has been the front-runner for the title character. However, as of late, his interest has seemed to wane and that might fall through. As such, Tarantino and company have been searching for alternate choices. These include Jamie Foxx, Idris Elba and Chris Tucker. Foxx seems to be the more likely option at this point. Either way, with production set to start in just a few months, it’s safe to assume we’ll get an answer on that soon enough.

Stay tuned here for more information as it becomes available. Meanwhile, I’ll be looking forward to the movie next year. Can’t think of a better way to spend Christmas than with a Tarantino movie.

Cool, though I wonder if this is going to be another display of “look at how many classic genre films I’ve seen” from Tarantino. If he reigns himself in, he’s nothing short of amazing. If his indulgences run wild, he just makes “best of” movies, which are as bad as if not worse than “best of” albums.

I don’t mind all his “homage paying” stuff. In fact, I’ve liked all of his movies thus far (except From Dusk Till Dawn). To me, he always does it in a proper way. Now if he starts getting to the point that it ceases to be nods and is just flat out blatant ripping off and copy pasting some type of “best of” mash-up, then I’ll have a problem.
