‘Man of Steel’ Finds His Nemesis

Warner Bros and Zack Snyder have announced that they’ve finally filled the main roles for next year’s Superman movie. The filmmakers have revealed that the villain facing off against Superman in Man of Steel will be none other than General Zod. Furthermore, the studio has revealed that Michael Shannon will be playing the role of the evil foe.

Michael Shannon will face off against Henry Cavill who was previously revealed to be taking up the role of Clark Kent/Superman. Amy Adams has been confirmed to be taking on the role of Lois Lane as well. Other actors involved in the project are Kevin Costner and Diane Lane who will play the Earth parents of Clark Kent.

Speaking on the choice to use General Zod as the villain and the casting of Michael Shannon, Snyder had this to say: “Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.”

I’m not entirely sure how well Shannon might fit into this role, however, he’s definitely a good actor. Previously, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his work in Revolutionary Road. He’s also been seen in movies such as 8 Mile and Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. Recently, he was seen in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire.

I must admit I’ve never heard of Shannon before this weekend and I was shocked to find out that he even had an Oscar nomination. But I see many US filmgoers like him … Still, if you ask me, he’s no Viggo Mortenesen :(

Yea, I don’t think Michael Shannon is all that well known. Or maybe he’s more like one of those types that nobody has heard of but several will recognize when they see him.

For me, he’s definitely a good actor and he can do the creepy/sinister bit well. I always think of him more as a “lower class”/grittier type of bad guy though. The Zod character seems more “refined” than that.

I do agree with you, though, Viggo would’ve been much better.

If anyone is still doubtful they should check out Boardwalk Empire and Revolutionary Road :D. I think Shannon will be able to capture the intelligence and brutality of General Zod.
